Synthetic or designer drugs that mimic the effects of marijuana, LSD and other psychoactive substances have now been banned in Minnesota.
The battle on designer drugs is far from over, however. Drug designers have created new substances that are reportedly in compliance with Minnesota law.
Unless the Minnesota legislature publishes broader definitions of controlled substances, this will continue to be an issue with drug makers changing the drug to escape a ban. By the time a new ban is issued, a newer, legal synthetic version of the drug is already created and available.
Proponents of designer drug, which largely consists of the Minnesota stores that sold them and the addicts themselves, say that banning the drugs does nothing to stop people from getting them. They are right.
This raises one legitimate point: the ultimate solution to drug abuse is not a ban, but to educate youth into an understanding that there is no need to depend upon a chemical substance in order to get by in life. And to teach them how to handle the difficult situations that are part of life, without running to alcohol or a drug to solve the problem.
Chemical dependency is a trap that just gets worse and worse the more the addict uses. It does not matter where the drugs are legal, such as alcohol or designer drugs, or whether they are of the illegal variety.
