Drug Abuse Prevention was the topic of the day when a discussion panel was hosted by Manhattan DA and the White House Officials. There were local community leaders, health service organizations and law enforcement agencies that got together with these officials to discuss combating drug abuse in the New York City neighborhoods. Two things were brought up; the increase of prescription drug abuse and how the youth of New York is using more and more illegal drugs.
It was noted that there is a reduction in the destructive results of illegal drug use in the New York City area and that was mostly because of the great work the law enforcement agencies have done. At the same time there is a growing threat of prescription drug abuse. Like all drug use it will be addressed vigorously in a widespread campaign that uses all of the recourses in the community.
Statistics show 16% of the city of New York reported using illicit drugs or medications in the past year. Deaths with prescription drugs being used have increased to 25% in 2009; when it was 16% in 2005.
A program that will be used to help drug abuse is the National Prescription Drug Take Back Program. It will get knowledge to the families and give them a place to get rid of their expired prescription drugs. The DEA is staging the third National Prescription Drug Take-Back event on October 29, 2011 throughout the nation. The most recent take back in April received 188 tons of unwanted or expired medications and these will be properly disposed of.
