New study on Antidepressants

By admin on January 27, 2013

There are some of us out there that are taking some pretty serious drugs for serious conditions.  One of the things we need to be aware of is that some of these drugs do counteract with each other.  It is a good idea to talk with our physicians and find out all the information we need.

Just recently HealthDay released a report that gave new information from a study finding that selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs)

And by the way that all includes Celexa, Paxil, Prozac, and Zoloft may raise the risk for major bleeding in patients that are also taking warfarin. In some cases these drugs are already being abused and can raise the risk even more.

So the experts are saying that they are not upset about the findings and they know that depression is a hard thing to treat so by all means don’t get off your medication for depression just get your doctors to keep a close eye on you.  The findings were presented at the American heart Association annual meeting in Los Angeles.  Gene Quinn, resident physician at the University of California said, “The most important thing would be to talk to their doctor, and perhaps for patients who are on both of these medicines, doctors should keep a close eye on them.”

Warfarin is prescribed to help prevent strokes.  Smaller less vigorous studies suggests that SSRI antidepressants might interact with Warfarin to boost bleeding risks, but those studies had not taken into account some other factors like the age of a patient or level of illness.  In a new study these factors were taken into account.  They looked at an ongoing study of more than 13,000 people with the irregular heartbeat and almost 9,200 of the patients were also taking warfarin and that is who they focused on.  Quinn reported, “We found that there was a 60 percent higher risk of major hemorrhage in patents that were taking SSRIs and warfarin versus who weren’t taking an SSRI.”  The findings remain an association only and the study could not prove that SSRI use actually helped to cause the bleeds. If I took 100 people and treated them with warfarin for one year each there would be 1.3 hemorrhages, whereas on SSRIs there would be 2.3 hemorrhages out of those 100 people.”

Well there you have it much research and study about how drugs do affect our bodies.  I do know that depression is a tough thing to have.  I also know that most of us buy into the ads on TV that the answer to this depression is a pill.  Maybe if we all tried to help ourselves with natural ways to maintain our bodies all of these discussions would not have to happen.

If you or someone you know needs help finding natural ways to substitute for previous drug usage or abuse, contact us.
