Bullied Teens

By admin on February 15, 2013

You ever heard of a teen ager getting post traumatic disorder?  Researchers from the University of Stavanger in Norway got some findings that say that victims of bullying may require long-term support because they are being bullied and can develop post traumatic stress disorder symptoms.  In this study they looked at 1,000 teens between the ages of 14 and 15 and what they came up with is that one third of those who said they had been bullied had post traumatic stress disorder symptoms.  What are those symptoms?  Intrusive memories and avoidance behavior.  Another interesting fact is that those with the worst symptoms were doing the same thing to others like bully them.  They also found that girls were more likely to have post traumatic stress disorder symptoms than boys.  Study Author Thormod Idsoe, said “The findings are noteworthy, but nevertheless unsurprising.  Bullying is defined as long-term physical or mental violence by an individual or a group.  It’s directed as a person who’s not able to defend themselves at the relevant time.  We know that such experiences can leave a mark on the victim.  Pupils who are constantly plagued by thoughts or images of painful experiences—and who use much energy to suppress them—will clearly have less capacity to concentrate on schoolwork.  Nor is this usually easy to observe they often suffer in silence.  In such circumstances, adult responsibility isn’t confined to stopping the bullying, It also extends to following up with the victims.” They might need help in the form of rehab if bullying has affected a kid enough.

It seems that when I was in school there wasn’t that much of bullying going on.  Of course that was in the 50s and things were a lot different then.  I can’t help but wonder that just because they have given this a name like “bullying”  that now attention is n this situation.  There is no doubt that these children are depressed and have low self esteem.  I also know that parents bring these kids to doctors and put them on drugs.  So there in is the problem.  This PTSD was put out by the pharmaceutical company so now you have a disorder that if your child has it they need to be put on drugs; and that makes the drug company happy and rich.  I believe that is the whole point.  In the fifties we handled the kids that bullied our kids.  Absolutely work with your child if he is being bullied.  Give them love and support and go to the school where this is happening. We don’t need to put our kids on drugs. There is no need that we feel helpless about this.  Something can be done about it.
