Pharmacies in Florida

By admin on February 6, 2013

The Drug Enforcement Administration had a press release just this week from Miami, Florida.  Mark Trouville who is a special agent in charge of the Miami Field Division came out to announce issuance of Orders to Show Cause to three Walgreens Florida pharmacies.  What that means is when this notice is served from the DEA then these pharmacies get a chance to show cause as to why the DEA should not revoke its DEA registration.  It seems that they are doing this because these pharmacies were deemed inconsistent with the public interest.  Their ability to handle or distribute narcotic medications is not immediately suspended but their ability is being questioned.

Trouville said, “The diversion of pharmaceutical controlled substances continues to be a great concern for the DEA.  A DEA registrant is a privilege and not a license for bad behavior.  These Registrants have a responsibility to their customers, as well as to the community, to be an advocate against prescription drug abuse that has plagued Florida since 2009, and not contribute to the epidemic.  The Miami Field Division will continue to work with our local and state partners to assure that all prescription drugs are getting into the hands of legitimate patients for legitimate medical needs.”

Earlier in the year The DEA Miami Diversion Office served a warrant on these pharmacies to determine if the distribution center maintained a system that detects and reports suspicions orders to the DEA and to prevent the diversion of control substances as governed by federal laws.  They did that so they could determine of the pharmacies were dispensing prescriptions issued for legitimate medical purposes and “in the course of professional practice.”

All of these actions are how the DEA Miami Field Division is continuing to combat the state’s prescription drug abuse epidemic and its role as a major source to other states.

It has been determined that on average seven people die every day in Florida because of prescription drug abuse this information comes from the Florida Department of Law Enforcement. They might have been saved if they had known about drug abuse solutions. Just in recent years there has been much effort against Florida doctors, pain clinic personnel and other pharmacies that did actions outside the scope of legitimate medical purposes.  It is also know that he DEA has used many resources to get the word out to all pharmacies and the public to battle this epidemic.  Florida has been a location where drugs have been diverted to other states so well done to the DEA for taking such actions.
