The increased availability of high purity heroin that can be snorted allows a new, younger population to use heroin without a syringe and needle. Methamphetamine

Methamphetamine is the primary drug threat in California. Mexican organizations continue to dominate the production and distribution of high-quality meth, while a secondary trafficking group, composed primarily of Caucasians, operates small, unsophisticated laboratories. Clandestine laboratories can be found in any location [including] high density residential neighborhoods [and] sparsely populated rural areas.

Vicodin®

Current investigations indicate that diversion of hydrocodone products such as Vicodin®, and oxycodone products such as OxyContin®, continues to be a problem in California. Primary methods of diversion being reported are illegal sale and distribution by health care professionals and workers, “doctor shopping” (going to a number of doctors to obtain prescriptions for a controlled pharmaceutical), forged prescriptions, employee theft, pharmacy and in-transit theft, and the Internet. Fentanyl (such as Actiq®), benzodiazepines (such as Valium®, diazepam and clonazepam), and codeine were also identified as being among the most commonly abused and diverted pharmaceuticals in California.

Marijuana remains the most widely available and abused illicit substance in California.

The Dwindling Spiral Will Continue

One thing is for certain, for a drug addict, the dwindling spiral will continue on its downward path unless action is taken. January 1, 2009, KCRA News website reported, “Drugs Found Hidden in Car, Police Say” Police found a stash of drugs hidden inside a secret compartment of a car in south Sacramento, authorities said.

Officers received a complaint on Wednesday afternoon of possible narcotics-related activity occurring in the 7200 block of Mandy Drive.

Patrol officers responded to the area and pulled a car over. According to police, officers had probable cause to search the vehicle because the occupants were on probation.

An officer noticed an unusual crack on the front console of the car, took a closer look and discovered a concealed compartment that contained 50 grams of marijuana, 2 grams of cocaine, a scale and a loaded pistol, a police report said.

December 27, 2008, KTXL Fox40 News website reported, “Minivan Slams Into South Sacramento Hair Salon” Two women are recovering after being hit by a van that slammed into their workplace. It happened late Saturday afternoon at the Exclusive Hair Salon along Fruitridge Road.

According to witnesses the driver of the minivan, Johnny W., was going as fast as 40 miles per hour when he slammed through the building. The impact wiped out glass windows, security bars and even caused the ceiling to collapse. At least one of the victims was pinned between the van and a wall. Both women were taken to the hospital and are expected to make a full recovery.

W. was arrested on suspicion of drunk driving. Officers also say W. had warrants out for his arrest. At least one of them was for drug possession.

The Damage to Society

In the State of California, and specifically in the city of Sacramento, the effects of drug and alcohol abuse goes way past the the damage done to the addicts themselves.
