Juneau is the capital of Alaska since 1906. Juneau is located in the panhandle of Southeast Alaska; downtown Juneau is nestled at the base of Mount Juneau and across the channel from Douglas Island. Juneau was eventually named after gold prospector Joe Juneau. The economy is based on government, tourism, mining, and fishing. With a population of 30,711, Juneau has an average family household of 3.10.

January 3, 1959, President Dwight D. Eisenhower names the Alaska Territory the 49th state of the Union.

Alaska's Drug Source
The DEA (The US Drug Enforcement Administration) reports that marijuana is the most abused and widespread drug in Alaska. In June 2006, then-Alaska Governor Frank Murkowski signed HB149 which re-criminalizes the use and possession of marijuana. Almost all of the marijuana grsown in Alaska is harvested in indoor growing operations.

Various organizations are involved in trafficking cocaine in Alaska. Crack cocaine also continues to be a threat in Alaska, with many organizations dealing in both cocaine and crack. These organizations obtain cocaine from the lower 48 states. Due to Alaska’s remote location, these organizations are able to resell cocaine in Alaska at grossly inflated rates.

Heroin continues to be available in Alaska. Various organizations import and distribute heroin to a variety of users.

There are two types of methamphetamine in Alaska; methamphetamine that is produced locally in clandestine methamphetamine laboratories, and methamphetamine that is imported into Alaska.

MDMA (4-methylenedioxymethamphetamine/street name Ecstasy) is available in Alaska. Drug trafficking organizations distributing cocaine, methamphetamine, and marijuana are acquiring small amounts of MDMA for distribution. LSD (lysergic acid diethylamide) and GHB² (gamma-hydroxybutyrate) are also available in Alaska on a small scale.

One thing is for certain, for a drug addict, the dwindling spiral will continue on its downward path unless action is taken. NOW is the time to do something before the addicted person winds up in jail or dead of an overdose or accident. Unfortunately past failed attempts to overcome addiction only further depress the individual so it comes as no surprise that fear and hesitation. 
In the city of Juneau, there is an increased need for effective drug and alcohol rehab and addiction treatment centers as drug and alcohol use continues to escalate. Drug use erodes the quality of life not only for the user, but for their families and communities. Marriages and families are torn apart by mistrust, betrayal, fear and anger. Alaska Drug Related Arrests 
JuneauEmpire.com released a story in December, 2008 entitled, High Schools See Uptick in Drug Arrests. In the story they report: Five area high schoolers have been arrested this month on felony drug charges for marijuana possession, and the head of the region's juvenile probation office said he's been "inordinately busy" with school drug cases.

JuneauEmpire.com released another story in December, 2008 entitled, Alleged "Source" of Oxycontin in City Scheduled for Trial. David C., 24, is scheduled to go to trial later this month on charges that he tried to smuggle a large amount of the prescription painkiller OxyContin into Juneau.
OxyContin has become an increasingly popular drug in Juneau, especially among teens, and is becoming more expensive as users seek out the drug, according to authorities.
"Pure supply and demand," said Juneau Police Sgt. Dave Campbell.
Campbell said users pay by the milligram, and the going rate for an 80 mg pill is $180.
The prosecution of C., who was charged in January of this year for his alleged smuggling attempt in 2006, is an example of police efforts to go after drug dealers who use others to smuggle in drugs, Campbell said.

The Damage to Society
In the State of Alaska, and specifically in the city of Juneau, the effects of drug and alcohol abuse goes way past the the damage done to the addicts themselves. In terms of time lost on the job, to the health system inundated by illness and overdoses to communities harmed by the crime rate caused by addicts looking to steal anything in order to get their next fix, to families living a nightmare as they watch helplessly as their loved one goes further down the chutes. The rollercoaster of emotions, concern and anger seems like a never ending  ride the abuser puts his friends and family through. In Alaska, there are many attempts being made to meet the needs of drug addicts, but statistics show success rates to be dismally low. What is needed and wanted is a drug treatment which not only handles physical addiction, but finds the underlying reasons why a person turns to drugs in order to free the person forever. Factually this is the normal reactive auto response of most human beings; to do what they are familiar with; good or bad. It is not really that they yearn for these things, it is just all that they have known for some time. If the abuser is close to home when overwhelming feelings manifest themselves, there is a good chance he or she will leave and get back to what they know, drug addiction, as it is not very far away . Due to these factors, attending a drug rehab close to home is seldom the correct treatment option for chronic drug or alcohol abusers. It is extremely therapeutic to be distanced from their former association with drug dealers, bars, the cabinet where the alcohol was kept, the cigar box where the cocaine was stored, etc. All these triggers make the task of sobriety seem insurmountable to the chronic drug or alcohol abuser as these triggers continuously stimulate a reminder of their past addictive behaviors.
