Philadelphia, Pennsylvania has a population of 1,517,550
with an average household size of 2.48 and is located in Philadelphia County.
The city is the largest in the state and the sixth most populous in the
country. Popular nicknames include The City of Brotherly Love and Philly. It
was here that the founding fathers including Benjamin Franklin worked on
America's independence. Philadelphia served as the nation's first capital
during much of the Revolutionary War and after up until the ratification of the
U.S. Constitution...and during the time it took to build the national capital
in Washington D.C. from 1790 to 1800.
Philadelphia is home the Eagles, National Football League,
the Flyers, of the National Hockey League, the Phillies of the National League
of Major League Baseball and the 76ers in the National Basketball Association.
There are dozens of national historical monuments and sites
including Independence Hall where the Declaration of Independence of signed.
There are numerous museums, art galleries and performing arts centers. In fact,
Philadelphia has more public art than any other American City.
According to CityRating.com, Philadelphia tends to rate
higher than the National Average in crime rates including murder, forcible
rape, robbery and car theft. Philadelphia continues to also have an ongoing
drug problem.
In the city of Philadelphia, there is an increased need for
effective drug and alcohol rehab and addiction treatment centers as drug and
alcohol use continues to escalate. Drug use erodes the quality of life not only
for the user, but for their families and communities. Marriages and families
are torn apart by mistrust, betrayal, fear and anger. Careers are ruined;
companies lose millions of dollars in lost production time; cities and suburbs
become degraded by the increased crime and violence that goes with drug
trafficking and drug addiction. To do nothing for the addict, should not be an
option. Something can be done; help is available.
Philadelphia, Pennsylvania Drug Information
The DEA (The US Drug
Enforcement Administration)2 reports that cocaine HCl remained one of the drugs
of choice, as its overall popularity has not diminished greatly over the last
few years. The use of cocaine HCl, which is cooked into crack cocaine in most
cases, remained a significant concern in suburban and rural communities outside
of Philadelphia. Reports indicated that cocaine HCl continued to be snorted and
used in combination with heroin and/or alcohol. Reports also indicated that
admissions for cocaine treatment have been overtaken by admissions for heroin
treatment in several areas of central Pennsylvania.
Marijuana remained abundantly available in both wholesale
and retail quantities in Pennsylvania. In western Pennsylvania, marijuana
abundance was attributed to the continued use of commercial shipping companies
to transport it as well as the existence of growing operations in the area. The
investigation of an Asian trafficking organization revealed that high-grade
BC Bud marijuana was also available in the Philadelphia area.
South American heroin remained widely available in
Pennsylvania, as distributors continued to target new customers in smaller
towns and rural areas. Although the greater Philadelphia area is generally
considered a consumer heroin market, North Philadelphias street corner
distribution sites also attracted distributors from locales throughout
Pennsylvania. Heroin is also distributed to a lesser extent in West and South
Philadelphia. There are also several Dominican sources of supply concentrated
in Northeast Philadelphia. The relocation of trafficking organizations resulted
in the increased availability of heroin in locations once thought to be exempt
from the problems associated with heroin distribution and use.
Methamphetamine is available in varying quantities in
Pennsylvania with consumption concentrated in the Philadelphia area. The
majority of the methamphetamine used in Pennsylvania is supplied by local
traffickers who manufacture or produce it themselves and by major trafficking
organizations operating in California and Mexico. The rural parts of
Pennsylvania remained the most popular sites for clandestine laboratories due
to the reduced risk of detection caused by the pungent odor of a laboratory as
well as the likelihood of a lesser law enforcement presence. However,
investigations continued to reveal that small-scale laboratories exist anywhere
from residences to motel rooms in cities and towns throughout Pennsylvania.
These laboratories account for the vast majority of methamphetamine
laboratories seized in Pennsylvania and the majority of methamphetamine
available in western Pennsylvania. However, the production output of these
laboratories represent only a small percentage of the methamphetamine consumed
in all of Pennsylvania.
MDMA (ecstasy) is primarily available at rave parties and
nightclubs in the metropolitan areas of Pennsylvania (Philadelphia and
Pittsburgh), but remains available to and popular among teenagers and young
adults on college campuses across the state.
Current investigations indicate that diversion of
hydrocodone products such as Vicodin®, oxycodone products such as
OxyContin®, fentanyl (such as Actiq®), and pseudoephedrine continues to
be a problem in Pennsylvania. Primary methods of diversion being reported are
illegal sale and distribution by health care professionals and workers,
doctor shopping (going to a number of doctors to obtain
prescriptions for a controlled pharmaceutical), forged prescriptions, and the
Internet. Benzodiazepines such as diazepam and alprazolam (both the generic
formulation and brand name Xanax®) were also identified as being among the
most commonly abused and diverted pharmaceuticals in Pennsylvania.

The number of workable drug abuse solutions in Philadelphia,
Pennsylvania are unfortunately very limited, as most programs aren't long-term
residential and aren't results-based. This is why so many people in
Philadelphia looking for a successful drug rehab program are turning to the
Riverbend Retreat for answers.
In the State of Pennsylvania, and specifically in the city
of Philadelphia, the effects of drug and alcohol abuse goes way past the the
damage done to the addicts themselves. In terms of time lost on the job, to the
health system inundated by illness and overdoses to communities harmed by the
crime rate caused by addicts looking to steal anything in order to get their
next fix, to families living a nightmare as they watch helplessly as their
loved one goes further down the chutes. The rollercoaster of emotions, concern
and anger seems like a never ending ride the abuser puts his friends and family
through. Failures in the past with drug rehab centers further numb the addict
to any hope of a future without drugs. It truly can appear hopeless.
What should the goal be of a drug rehab center? Clean and
sober for 30 days? While that might be a good short term goal, many treatment
centers and 12 step programs still leave the drug addict fighting a continuing
battle with addiction. Once an addict always an addict; or it's a mental
disorder they can do nothing about. When choosing a drug rehab center for
yourself or a loved one from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, it is important to
become educated on the different types of drug rehab and what the end results
are. |
