This Friday, a federal judge in San Diego, California sentenced Mexican drug smuggler Jesus Navarro-Montes to life in prison after he ran over and killed a U.S. Border Patrol agent.
The agent was attempting to stop Montes using a spike strip when Montes ran him over in his Hummer at a speed of at least 55 miles per hour.
Montes worked for a drug trafficking organization that operated by smuggling drugs through the Imperial Sand Dunes Recreation Area into Southern California. Montes impersonated an off-road enthusiast.
This was not Montes’s first run-in with the Border Patrol. In 2007, Montes was arrested for marijuana trafficking, but gained control of a U.S. Border Patrol vehicle and fled back to Mexico where he escaped.
Montes’s case highlights the high level of organization that the Mexican cartels operate from in smuggling drugs across the border. The “war on drugs” has resulted in criminal elements of our society evolving into highly efficient smuggling operations to get by border patrols and bring controlled substances into the U.S.
No matter how stiffly we fight the “war on drugs”, we will continue to have a drug problem in our country as long as there are addicts. To put it simply, criminal elements in our society will go to any lengths to make a buck off of drug users. The “supply and demand” economics of the drug black market actually rewards smugglers in proportion to risk, which makes it almost impossible to defeat drugs through enforcement.
