Mississippi Youth Graduate Drug Court Program

Hats off to four Natchez, Mississippi youth who graduated from the Adams County Youth Drug Court’s program on Tuesday, June 7th, 2011.

According to the Natchez Democrat, the youth drug court program is a service that provides addiction treatment to offenders and includes random drug testing and individual and family counseling. To graduate, students must remain drug-free for a period of at least one year and exhibit good behavior.

It is far better that the system divert young drug abusers to programs such as these rather than to juvenile detention. Part of the reason is that juvenile offenders who are sent to detention or juvenile hall are much more likely to eventually end up in prison.

The Mississippi penal system population largely consists of people arrested for drug-related crimes. If we can do a better job of reaching out to youth and educating them about the dangers of drugs, then we can teach them that a drug-free life is both productive and enjoyable. There’s no reason for them ever to see the inside of a prison. We’d all be a step closer to a drug-free Mississippi and Mississippi would also benefit economically.
