Fighting Recreational Marijuana

As many states move towards legalizing medicinal marijuana and more states legalize recreational use, many parents are concerned about the consequences of this legalization. An Oregon parent who’s been fighting legalization recalls how this drug impacted his son’s life. His son started smoking marijuana at a young age and by always pursuing a better high, he migrated to the use of more highly addictive drugs, eventually becoming addicted to cocaine. His son is now 40 and no longer struggles with drugs but this father is concerned for those who have not learned the lesson yet.

“My biggest fear is that everybody has given up on the problem of marijuana and is focused on regulating it,” Martin says. “If you believe legalization will cut down on teenage supply, I have a bridge to sell you.”

The truth is that many people who struggle with addiction started with marijuana. More liberal marijuana laws make the drug more accessible to users of all ages. One teacher commented that buying marijuana has become no different than getting a cup of Starbucks coffee.

Parents who wish to prevent marijuana use by their children need to be educated on the signs of drug abuse for this and other drugs. And thorough education of their children is vital if parents wish to prevent them from using drugs that could eventually destroy their lives.
